PSE&G helped the Boys & Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic cut energy costs—freeing up more funding for programs serving children and families.
The Boys & Girls Club of Paterson and Passaic (BGCPP) serves more than 1,400 children ages 5–18 each day with meals, academic support, and enrichment programs for families across the area. To keep those services strong, BGCPP must manage operating costs carefully.
At its Paterson facility, aging equipment was driving high energy use and adding operational strain. The PSE&G Direct Install Program helped the organization modernize critical building systems, lower energy costs, and redirect savings back into its youth programs and community services.

With high daily usage across large, active facilities, BGCPP faced increasing energy demands that made long-term planning difficult. A free energy assessment conducted by a PSE&G participating contractor identified key inefficiencies at the Paterson location, including aging HVAC equipment, a 24-year-old boiler system, and outdated pool-area lighting.
BGCPP needed a solution that could address major infrastructure upgrades without placing an overwhelming financial burden on the organization.

Through the Direct Install Program, BGCPP completed energy efficiency upgrades designed to improve safety, reliability, and affordability. The project replaced inefficient rooftop HVAC units, installed a high-efficiency boiler, and upgraded lighting in the Victor Cruz Aquatics Center.
PSE&G incentives covered more than 70% of the up-front costs. BGCPP was able to cover the remaining share and complete the work without taking on long-term debt.

PSE&G helped deliver upgrades that are creating meaningful financial and community benefits. BGCPP now saves an estimated $1,277 per month on energy costs, creating flexibility within its operating budget.
Those savings help sustain BGCPP’s Saturday Academic Tutoring Program, offered at no cost to children in Paterson and Passaic. The monthly energy savings alone translate into tutoring, healthy snacks, and lunches for approximately 20 children each week.
Beyond the direct cost savings, the energy reductions help the organization reduce its carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. The environmental impact is comparable to taking about 20 gasoline-powered cars off the road for a year or supplying electricity to more than a dozen homes annually.*
With support from PSE&G, the upgrades also created safer, more welcoming spaces. New LED lighting in the Victor Cruz Aquatics Center has improved visibility, enhanced safety, and increased participation in swim programs—supporting water safety education and youth development.
